a Chicago photography project

Pandemic Nightwalks began during the early days of the Covid-19 lockdown in March of 2020. Throughout the spring and summer, I found myself working entire days at the computer, for my teaching and increased involvement in community organizing. I often took the recommended daily walk after dark. I was fascinated by the quiet emptiness of the streets of my northside Ravenswood neighborhood.

I soon discovered the night mode function of the iPhone 11 cameras I was carrying. This tool was seemingly effortless to use, and I became enchanted by it, grateful for the creative outlet during this difficult time. An approach to documenting emerged, and the images I captured fell naturally into albums: streets, alleys, trees, doors, courtyards, buildings, the train, and spaces in between.
